MODLAN INTELLIGENCE RESOURCE · OVERVIEW
Preserving Dynamic Social Media Evidence
Why dynamic posts, videos, stories, comments, and changing public pages require more than a single screenshot when evidentiary use is anticipated.
Dynamic content changes
Online material can change between discovery and review. A preservation strategy considers volatility, source behavior, lawful accessibility, and whether repeat acquisitions are necessary.
Method matters
Platform-supported export or interface methods may preserve information that is not visible in a rendered screen. Documented browser acquisition can be appropriate where supported methods are unavailable. Screenshots are a last-resort representation and should not silently be described as forensic acquisition.
Video can preserve interaction context
For dynamic pages, video capture supplemented by timed stills can preserve navigation, visible timestamps, transitions, and other context that a single image cannot show.
Every method has limits
Preservation establishes what was acquired from a source at a documented time. It does not by itself establish authorship, truthfulness, relevance, or admissibility.
